This is a story of an image I had never planned for and at the same time almost never took place.

One early morning in the winter of 2023, around Christmas time, I reluctantly got out the door and placed my camera in the car. It wasn’t one of my usual planned shoots, as the weather lately had been particularly inconsistent lately, but I felt keen to get out and explore the winter scenes.

As I started clearing the snow from the car, I was thinking of where I should go. I was in a familiar place, with a few preferred spots in the mountains around. However, the snow would make some of them inaccessible, as roads would still be blocked or icy. Somehow, the prospect of digging the car out of knee-deep snow, as I had done just a few days before was not very appealing to me that morning.

So, I did something out of character for me and chose the road most travelled. That again, “chose” is a rather strong word, given the snowy weather and the blocked roads. I got in the car and made my way through the darkness, headlights bouncing off the snowbanks on the side of the road. Luckily, most of the road had been cleared, except, of course, for the last few hundred yards. So, I just parked and got out.

Feeling lucky just for having made it that far, I just grabbed my tripod and my coffee. I went through the deep snow, while being blasted by icy winds from one side. I made my way behind a few trees and huddled down in front of them just to get some cover from the wind. The sun was just coming up behind the mountains in front of me.

While I took my first sip of coffee for the morning, I watched as the wind pushed around a layer of thick clouds on the top of the mountains in front of me. The sun was rising just behind them, somewhere between the lower clouds from the valley bellow and the ones being blown around the mountain peaks. Just then, a few rays made their way through a break in the clouds. As part of the clouds went to bright red in a matter of seconds and the sky turned to purple light, I saw my image. I quickly stabilized my tripod in the deep snow, pushing its legs deep beneath the surface and then managed to snap a few images before the red spot disappeared altogether. The wind moved the clouds at a fast pace and soon the sun was soon covered again. My coffee was still warm.
