9. Careless living

I had been up since sunrise, eager to catch the day’s first light and the stories it might reveal. By late morning, after hours of wandering through quiet landscapes, I arrived at the edge of a flooded forest. The water stretched out before me, shimmering with a warm golden glow that the late morning sun cast gently across the scene.

There, rising from the water, were a few old tree stumps—silent witnesses to a forest swallowed when a mountainside suddenly collapsed. What held my gaze wasn’t the loss itself, but the surprising resilience growing atop those stumps. Small trees and wild vegetation had taken root, flourishing without hesitation or concern for the tragedy beneath them. Nature, it seemed, simply didn’t care where it grew; it just did.

I set up my tripod and adjusted my camera to capture the soft, glowing reflections on the water. Slowing the shutter speed, I let the surface blur into a smooth, dreamlike canvas, isolating the stumps and their new life as the heart of the frame. The late morning light wrapped everything in a warm embrace, highlighting the stubborn beauty of those tiny trees thriving where few would expect.

In that moment, I felt like a witness to a quiet kind of heroism. These plants weren’t waiting for permission or perfect conditions—they were simply living, boldly and carelessly, wherever they could. That spirit, that refusal to be held back by circumstance, is what I wanted to capture in this image I titled “Careless Living.”

Looking back, I remember the stillness of that morning, the golden light, and the lesson whispered by those little trees: life finds a way, no matter what.
